Daily Schedule

We have a very packed day! There is much to learn in first grade, and we make sure every moment possible is filled with educational experiences. Of course you can be sure we fit some fun in, too! Here's an overview of our day.

Morning Schedule

8:00

Doors open. Students choose to eat breakfast, play outside, or play quietly in the library.

8:30

First bell.
Administration
Students put MOOSE books away, do lunch choices, put homework books in place, put personal things in coatroom, and sit on the tile for calendar.

8:35

Tardy bell.
Calendar / Daily Schedule

Helpers are chosen to do calendar (day, date, weather, temperature, counting days of school). Ms. Barth explains the day's schedule. Students find their water bottles, choose a seat, and go to the carpet.

8:45

Assembly (Monday)
Mrs. Mick, Mr. Baker, and Mr. Brown lead the school through favorite routines and we practice being respectful members of an audience.

Writing (Tuesday through Thursday)
Ms. Barth presents a modeled writing minilesson using the Lucy Calkins writing curriculum. Students have time to practice independent writing during writing workshop. Ms. Barth conferences with students. Time is provided for students to share their writing and for Ms. Barth to share conference moments with the class that demonstrate good writing practices.

Technology Lesson (Friday)
Ms. Barth presents a new technology skill and gives computer lab directions for the day.

9:30

Math (Mon - Thurs)
The class will work on a lesson from Everyday Mathematics. When possible, lessons are split into centers so students benefit from small group instruction.

9:15 Library / Computer Lab (Fri)
We have a weekly visit to the library to share stories with Mrs. Milliken, check out books, and work in the computer lab.

10:30

Saxon Phonics and Spelling - New Skill Lesson
Ms. Barth presents a minilesson of today's new skill.

10:45 Recess
11:00 Saxon Phonics and Spelling - Independent Practice
Students practice learned skills in addition to today's new phonics skill. Class worksheets are used to practice sounds, reading and coding words, and reading sight words. Decodable readers are introduced. Spelling lists are provided and tests are taken.
11:25 Lunch Preparation

Afternoon Schedule

12:00 Show and Tell
Today's snack person (or birthday child) brings in an item for show and tell at this time.
Decodable Books or Read Alouds
Children practice reading their decodable books from the phonics program or Ms. Barth reads a story.

Physical Education: Monday and Wednesday
Music: Tuesday and Thursday
Special Math or Art Activities on Friday

Daily 3+
Ms. Barth presents reading skill lessons to the class and students indepentl work through 3 work periods. Each day they choose Read to Self and Read with Someone. Their third choice can be Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, or Word Work. Ms. Barth and Mrs. Brunell pull individuals and groups for guided reading. Parent volunteers assist students in switching their homework books for the next day.

1:55 Recess
2:10 Snack and Chapter Book
Students are served a healthy snack. As they finish, they join at the carpet to hear a chapter from a favorite book.

Content Work (Monday through Thursday)
This time of day is reserved for any of the following activities:

Fun Friday and Shopping (Friday)
Students choose any activity from the room including blocks, art, games, puzzles, legos, reading or writing.
Students count their money accumulated through the week and shop at the classroom store. We begin the year with $1 bills and gradually add $5s, $10s, and $20s.

3:10 Get Paid
Students receive their classroom money for good behavior and jobs performed.
3:18 Dismissal
Students are dismissed at the bell. If you pick your child up, you can meet in the lobby. Or, students are released to the appropriate bus.
